How is a centre checked?

An assessorSomeone working on our behalf who has experience and an interest in child contact services and must assess if a service meets our standards. looks round the centre’s rooms, toys, equipment, and any outside play areas to make sure that they are safe and good for you to use. They talk with the people at the centre to make sure that they are trained and helped to do their job as well as possible. They then check the informationThe assessor checks through the centre’s accreditation portfolio which includes policies, procedures, risk assessments, reports (if the service offers supervised contact) and information for families. on what happens at the centre and how it keeps you safe. If your family time happens in the community The service might use local community venues to deliver their service or in some cases, residential properties including family members’ homes, where this is safe and appropriate., then the assessor will check that this is going to be safe for you.

When the assessor is happy that a centre meets our standards then they are awarded their accreditation and you can find them on this website. Accreditation happens every three years with extra checks if needed.

Swan Family Centre, Coventry, is one several in England and Wales that Swan Family Centres runs as part of the wider service offered by Swanstaff Recruitment Ltd. The organisation is very experienced in running contact services and has the necessary policies and procedures in place. This particular centre has been operating since 2016 and is situated to the southwest of the city centre just outside the ring road, about 10 minutes’ walk from the train station and close to bus routes. It is at the edge of a residential area and close to a small retail park, and a green space park.

The centre is bright, colourful, and welcoming with attractive and well-equipped rooms. It is well cared for – each room being clean, tidy and well organised, with displays of children’s art on the walls. There is an ample selection of suitable toys, all in good condition, but not so many as to be overwhelming or disorganised.

The centre has a range of bright, colourful leaflets showing the contact rooms and including a range of information for the children and families who may use the centre. This information helps them to anticipate everything from making a referral to the appropriate steps to take if they are unhappy or feel unsafe.

Staff are friendly and helpful and are well supported by their managers who were well prepared and had organised a comprehensive portfolio. They were receptive to suggestions and demonstrated a really sound understanding of the role of the contact centre and the responsibilities of running it effectively. Any recommended actions following the visit are now complete meaning the service meets the standards for enhanced (supervised) contact accreditation.
